More than 100 members of AFSCME Local 66 were joined by AFSCME Council 5 members and allies as they rallied at Duluth City Hall earlier this month.
Members called for a fair contract and a greater recognition for the work they do for the city.
Bart Anderson, executive director of Council 5, said the show of strength was to let the City of Duluth know that the wider AFSCME community is watching negotiations carefully.
“Respect is earned, and I know damn well that through the work you do, you’ve earned respect, and now is the time to demand it,” Anderson said. “We will continue to fight, and when we fight, we win. It’s time for the city to stop messing with healthcare and sick leave.”
“Labor friendly employers don’t try to gut workers’ sick leave,” added Ken Loeffler-Kemp of Council 5.
