Late last month, the Head of the Lakes United Way held its 100-year Celebration luncheon, where Beth McCuskey, Duluth Central Labor Body President and NEALC vice president, received the inaugural Renee Van Nett Community Services Award.
Van Nett had served as the director of Community Services director and was also a Duluth City Counselor and passionate advocate for Labor in everything she did. As the event program described her, “A force to be reckoned with, she sparked important conversations and left generous room for humor, never taking herself too seriously.”
Until 10 years ago, the Joe Wiesinger Award was given annually to an individual or group that embodied the values of the committee. While bringing the award back, the committee decided to rename it after Van Nett in honor and memory of her work in and in support of the Labor movement.
A retired member of the DFT, McCuskey has been president of the CLB since 2017 and also serves as the current vice chair of the Head of the Lakes United Way Board, as well as on the executive committee and resource development committee. Congratulations, Beth!
