A day after U.S. Steel sold a 25 percent share of Minntac to Stelco, word came that more than 250 people will be laid off, according to Steelworkers Local 1938.
The layoffs begin May 18, the union said. The company predicts the layoffs will last about 8 weeks for plant employees and about 11 weeks for pit employees.
“This all has come very quickly and we are speculating that the full detail was not finalized until the Stelco deal was secured in the last few days,” the union told members. It is currently working on a layoff minimization plan.
