It’s time for your Northland Labor Day roadtrip! It’s possible to hit every Labor Day celebration if you’re willing to put in the work. It’s a great way to experience the rich traditions of honoring the working class in the region, and the perfect way to cap off the summer.
Your route starts in Cloquet, where the Labor Day parade steps off at 11 a.m. (lineup starts at 10, if you’re in it). At the front of the parade is the grand marshal, chosen by the Carlton County Labor community. 
Cloquet also holds a classic car show and there are games, bouncy houses and other activities for people of all ages throughout the day.
But if you want to hit all three celebrations, you have to duck out fairly quickly after the parade starts, and head up Hwy. 53 to Virginia, where the annual picnic, political speeches and music start at noon at Olcott Park. You’ll have enough time to eat a brat and shake some hands before it’s time to come back down 53 to Duluth, where the Central Labor Body picnic will be going on from noon to 4 p.m. at Bayfront.
The Duluth picnic also features music, politicking, free food and games for the kids. It’s open to everyone.
At all three events, you’ll run into candidates and elected officials eager for your support and your vote. It’s a perfect time to buttonhole a candidate and ensure they understand the issues that everyday people care about. They’re on your turf — take advantage of the opportunity!
